FDE gets AI running in the field. FDPM owns whether that system becomes a defendable business outcome.

Notes written from inside live deployments. What worked, what I got wrong, and what I'd charge for next time. The playbook for the role, drafted in public.
A forward deployed PM is a product decision-maker embedded in someone else's team, on the hook for a shipped outcome.
The pattern is borrowed from forward deployed engineering. Stop shipping advice to a customer and put the person who can decide inside the room where the work happens. The engineer's version solves integration. The PM's version solves judgment. What is worth building at all, now that building is cheap.
Same posture, different failure it exists to prevent.
| Dimension | Forward deployed engineer | Forward deployed PM |
|---|---|---|
| Deployed to solve | Integration. Make the product work in a customer's real environment. | Judgment. Decide what is worth building now that building is cheap. |
| First week | Access, data, environment, a working pipeline. | Support queue, sales calls, the repo, one obvious thing shipped. |
| Primary artefact | Working code in the customer's stack. | A weighted bet, an eval set, and a prototype that ends the argument. |
| Definition of done | It runs in production and the customer is unblocked. | The metric moved and the team can make the next call without me. |
| Main risk | Bespoke work that never returns to the core product. | Becoming the decision-maker instead of transferring the capability. |
| Leaves behind | Integrations, SDKs, patterns the platform absorbs. | An operating rhythm. Weekly bets, evals instead of opinions. |
A consultant's access ends at the readout and the incentive is the renewal. Deployment inverts both. You sit inside the team, and leave once the capability transfers.
Staff-aug takes the tickets you already wrote. A deployed PM decides which tickets should exist, and answers for the result.
Fractional leadership manages the function from above. Deployment works one altitude lower. In the repo, in the queue, on one bet at a time.
